China National Museum

On the east side of Tian'anmen Square stands a grandiose structure: the forthcoming China National Museum (Zhongguo Guojia Bowuguan). Until 2003 this iconic building housed the History Museum and Museum of Revolution. In honor of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, city authorities have embarked on a renovation and expansion program to create an art institution befitting one of the world's major capitals.

The building is scheduled to be closed between April 2005 and December 2007. Prior to that time, visitors may enjoy a reduced but still exquisite collection of bronze, ceramic, and jade pieces, as well as a new waxworks exhibition; a 35-model who's who of Chinese ancient and modern cultural history.
