Shopping - Department Stores

Beijing Department Store

This department store, located in Wangfujing, continues to attract large crowds with stores selling everything from jewelry to clothing to sports equipment, despite the allure of Sun Dongan and the even bigger Oriental Plaza complex.

Address: 255 Wangfujing Dajie, Dongcheng District

Beijing Friendship Store

A longtime tourist favorite, this department store sells the widest range of traditional Chinese goods and handicrafts under one roof, including hand-drawn tablecloths, silk and cashmere goods and clothing (they guarantee authenticity, so rest assured that cashmere items you buy here are the real thing), porcelain, watercolor paintings, traditional Chinese medicine, teas, jade and gold jewelry, rugs (both silk and wool), and groceries.

Address: 17 Jianguomenwai Dajie, Chaoyang District

China World Shopping Mall

You'll find designer boutiques such as Prada and Ferragamo at this upscale shopping mall. For quality souvenirs, check out Tian Fu, a branch of the famous Chinese tea sellers. The teas are of high quality and come in very attractive packaging. Emperor sells bedding, tablecloths, and napkins made from Chinese silk. Zhang's Textiles is a Chinese crafts store and antique shop; and Liuligongfang sells Chinese-style crystal creations and jewelry.

Address: 1 Jianguomenwai Dajie, Chaoyang District

Lufthansa Center

This top Beijing department store stocks cosmetics, consumer electronics, wool and cashmere clothing, and new rugs; a Western grocery store occupies the basement.

Oriental Plaza

This shopping complex begins at the southern end of Wangfujing, where it meets Changan Jie, and stretches a block east to Dongan Dajie. You'll find upscale shops including Kookai, TSE, MaxMara, and Sisley.

Pacific Century Place

Managed by a Japanese company, this department store has 3 Japanese restaurants as well as an organic-grocery store in the basement.

Address: 2A Gongti Bei Lu, Sanlitun, Chaoyang District

Sun Dong An Plaza

This massive shopping center has dozens of designer shops but makes a concession to Old Peking with a traditional-style shopping street on the second floor.

On the 4th floor, Mu Zhen Liao Chinese Fashion Boutique sells high-quality, ready-made qipaos (Chinese-style dresses) as well as tailor-made ones. The store is especially popular with brides-to-be.

Address: 138 Wangfujing Dajie, Dongcheng District

Tongli Studio

A tiny but welcome addition to Beijing's growing collection of malls, Tongli Studio has several one-of-a-kind artsy and upscale shops by local designers. This is a good place to spend some time browsing for jewelry, ceramics, and home decor shops if you are in the Sanlitun area.

Address: Sanlitun Lu, Chaoyang District
