Black Temple

Black Temple (Zhihua Si), also known as the Temple of Wisdom Attained, is found in the Chaoyangmen area of Beijing. It was built in 1443 by order of Wang Zhen, the chief eunuch at the court of Emperor Zhengtong of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644AD). The temple is one of the largest and finest examples of Buddhist architecture from the period.

The glazed deep blue tiling which line the roof ridges of the major buildings create a striking yet solemn effect and is the reason behind the name Black Temple. 7 principal halls make up the temple. Particularly striking is the Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas which has 9,000 niches in the walls each housing a small statue of the Buddha.
